Perhentian Island Challenge

Halfway through the bus ride to Terengganu to attend and co-host with Tabah Syazwan a special on the Perhentian Island Challenge, I was started to become irritable....

The bus journey was taking so long, my back was starting to hurt, I was tired...

Tabah said to me.... "Sha, I JANJI! Bila you sampai Pulau Perhentian, you akan lupa semua!" (Sha, I PROMISE! When you arrive at Pulau Perhentian, you will forget everything!)

When I arrived this is what I saw.....

Crystal clear water....

An inviting beach... he was right I forgot everything.....

The Perhentian Island Challenge is in it's 4th year and Tabah and I talk about various aspects of Perhentian Island and the challenge...

The special sports documentary will be aired on TV3 in October...

I will let you know time and date once I have confirmed it with the producers...

A hairdressers visit with a Hollywood ending - I met Mel Gibson!

When I woke up this morning, I had only had 3 hours sleep cause I just came back from Pulau Perhentian to cover the Perhentian Island Challenge (I'll write about this later....)

I went to the office to follow up on several things, did a voice-over etc etc...same routine kind of things...

Because of all the sea and sun exposure, my hair was starting to resemble a bird's nest again...

So I decided to go to A Cut Above, at Bangsar Shopping Centre for a quick hair treatment....

Treatment all done, I start walking out of the hairdresser... and who do I see?

MEL GIBSON!

Yes, THE MEL GIBSON!

He casually walks in with a few people and asks to have his hair washed and cut....

Everyone just stood there with mouths gaping open....

Can this really be happening?!

As you can imagine, the front area of the hairdressers starts becoming a hive of whispers..

"Is it him? Are you sure? Really? Why is he here?" everyone was asking each other.....

And of all days, I didn't have my camera with me!

Not one to let a minor detail like this stop me, I rushed downstairs to the nearest photo shop and bought a throw away camera... I didn't care how much it cost! Lucky for me..not too much!

Ran back upstairs, asked for a piece of paper and marker pen from the hairdresser's reception and waited...

Felix, the lovely guy who usually does my hair was attending to Mel Gibson...

When he came out the front, I said to him.. "Felix, I really want to take a picture with him... How? Can ah?"

Felix answered..."Let me finish doing his hair first then you can...."

So I waited along with all the other hairdressers for him to finish..... I waited an hour.. I didn't dare go anywhere, not even to the bathroom cause I didn't want to miss the chance to take a photo with him!

Finally, hair all done.. he comes out.. everyone is waiting with their handphone cameras and me with my throw away one!

Felix introduces me to him...he is friendly and nice.... Some what star struck, the first thing I said to him was...

Me : "My mother is Australian too....." (yes, I know a bit of a stupid thing to say but I wasn't thinking straight!)

He chuckles and answers...

Mel Gibson - Oh yeah? Where from?

Me - Melbourne

Mel Gibson - But you work here?

Me - Yes I do....

Mel Gibson - What do you do?

Me - I work in television....

Mel Gibson - Oh wow... that must be good....

Me - Yes it is....

I politely ask to take a picture with him.... and Felix does....

I then politely ask for his autograph too....

Mel Gibson - "Wow.. you're prepared..."

He then signs the piece of paper I had ready for him...

He spelt my name correctly too and I didn't have to spell it out for him... Though I have no idea what the rest of it reads....

As soon as he finished, all of the hair dressers crowded around him to grab the opportunity of taking a picture with him....

He was very nice about the whole thing and smiled for everyone.....

Once that was done, he started making his way out....

In a few moments he was gone, as quickly as he appeared....

All of us in the hairdressers just stood there still shocked that Mel Gibson, major Hollywood star and producer could so casually walk into A Cut Above in Bangsar and have his hair washed and cut!

I quickly went back downstairs to the photo shop and asked to express develop the photos...

As I was waiting, I was praying that the photos would turn out ok and not somehow be destroyed in the printing process, because it has happened to me before...

Thankfully all ok and now I've had to take a picture of the pictures with my digital camera so I can put it up here.. that's why they are not so clear...no scanner available at this time..

I also kept the marker pen he used to autograph that piece of paper for me.. Sorry A Cut Above... I'll buy you a new one.. I won't be giving this one back!

Wow! I really was just in the right place at the right time...

Such is the beauty of life..... :)

I'm still here!

Don't panic!

I don't what's wrong but my blog it's previous template setting was giving problem so I've quickly started using this one....

I'm still here!

When I was a waitress.....

As I was having dinner tonight and watching the waiters and waitresses going about doing their job in the restaurant, I couldn't help but remember when I was a waitress....

While I was studying in Perth, Western Australia, of course I wanted money to shop... and the only way I knew how to do that was by getting a job and one of the easiest jobs to get while one is a student is as a waitress...

The first place I started at was an Indian restaurant called D'Tandoor restaurant. The chefs were really nice Indian guys and I would always take a big back pack to work because before they closed up the kitchen for the night, they would specially make for me whatever I wanted from the menu, put it into tupperwares and put it into my back pack for me. My favourite was butter chicken and garlic naan.... yummy.....

On my first shift there, in other words, my very first time as a waitress, I was carrying a tray full of yummy, hot, indian food....

I got to the table that had placed the order put half the tray on the table, picked up some of the bowls of food and because the weight was not balanced on the tray, the remaining 3-4 bowls of food fell... onto me... down my left leg!!!

Every guest at the table and me just gasped!

I muttered some kind of miserable apology and ran back into the kitchen.... When the chefs in the kitchen saw all the food down my leg, they just shook their head and quickly remade a new set of food for the table....

Ever since then, they told me to only clear plates.... I don't blame them...

Since I don't drink any form of alcohol, I don't know anything about it.. what kind of wine goes with what food, what tastes good, what doesn't... seriously no idea ok!

So when a table ordered a bottle of red wine, I proceeded to give it to them, served in an ice bucket....

I was then told by the head waiter that only white wine is served chilled... NOT red wine!

Yes, that is how uneducated I am about it!

After D'Tandoor, I worked at the Melbourne Hotel in Perth for a while.... They served the best chocolate cake there! Several times I remember going into the little staff room to find half a chocolate cake on the table, because I vaguely remember this ruling where they are not supposed to serve cake older than 3 days.... so they would just put it in the staff room. It was still ok to eat it.. so I did!

The last place I worked at was an Italian restaurant. I can't remember the name now. They served the best free after dinner mints, and I had a big pocket on my apron so I would always fill it up with the chocolate mints and eat them when I had a spare moment...

At the end of every shift, the chef would make us the best pizzas too!

And because I worked so hard to earn so little money (anyone who has ever worked as a waiter will tell you how painful your legs get), anytime I saw something I wanted to buy, I would calculate how many hours I would have to work to pay for it..

Example...

I was earning about 10 - 12 dollars an hour....

Jacket cost $100.... meaning I would have to slave away for about 10 hours to have the money to buy the jacket....

Yikes! That's a lots of plates I would have cleared....

This is why I still have a lot of things in my wardrobe which I paid for with 'waitressing money'. I haven't forgotten how hard I worked to get the money to buy them....

As a result, I never have and never will treat waiters and waitresses badly....

I was one of them....

(sorry, no pictures of me as a waitress!)

Birthday wish list...

I just LOVE this necklace...

Worn by Nicole Kidman in the movie Moulin Rouge....

My birthday is not too far away now and friends always say to me "I don't know what to get you!"

Why is it so hard?

Big diamante necklaces from Sungai Wang are fine!!!! The bigger and more glittering the better!

And I don't even expect real diamonds!

Gwen Stefani concert...yahoo!!!

As I write this, it's 12.30 am on Wednesday the 22nd of August in KL and if you read this before the newpapers hits the stands, these are probably the first few pictures you will see of Gwen Stefani's concert here in KL! There are not that fantastic or clear, but it will give you an idea....

Of course the place was really crowded!

So what was I expecting from a Gwen Stefani concert?

Number one, of course fabulous costumes! (mesti meletup...kalau tak...fail!)
Number two, awesome, ornate sets

When I arrived and looked at the stage, the first thing that went through my mind was "What an empty stage... kosong betul"

I was expecting to see big gold ornate gilded picture frames and huge ornate chairs... There wasn't a single one in sight....

"Hmmmmm...ok...nevermind..... hopefully she makes up for it in costumes...."

She started the show wearing this really cool black and white outfit.. you can't tell from this picture but the black and white stripes were all glittering!!! I loved it!!!!!

This costume looked a bit strange to me.... I think it was trying to do a modern take on a kimono... it just didn't look comfortable.....

I don' t have a good picture of this but she also wore a gorgeous pair of red shorts which was totally covered in swarovski crystals.... I loved that too!

The song I was waiting for and I'm sure a lot of people were too, was my favourite Gwen song "What are you waiting for?"

Because of the video and because it became obvious to me halfway through the show that she was saving that one for last, I was fully expecting her to come out in a very Galliano for Dior Couture looking gown....

She didn't!!!!! What???!!!!!

Instead she wore a little jumpsuit like she wore for the first song but this time it was blue and black leopard print covered in swarovski crystals as well.....

It's not she didn't have time to change, she was backstage a while before she came out...

Sigh......

Oh well..... I liked pretty much everything though.... I mean, I wouldn't complain at all if she wanted to give me one of her costumes! and after seeing how good her legs look, I feel like I should live in the gym for the next 6 months!

Another item she wore which I loved is this cape like coat/ jacket.... I've seen a picture of Victoria Beckham wearing something like it to.... Hoping ZARA will come up with a version of it!

I still enjoyed the show and am so glad I had the chance to go...

And now, I'm craving more than ever, a TOTALLY SWAROVSKI CRYSTALLED item of clothing....

maybe a jacket.....maybe a skirt....hmmmmm...thinking, thinking......

And who else did I see there....

Two other glitter loving girls....

you rocked the house gwen!

Winner announced!

Well... I'm very impressed!

Everyone who emailed me the answers to the questions this week were correct...

However, I can only give away one prize, so I have to give it to the person whose email arrived first...

Skitso as a kitten

I just found these photos of Skitso as a kitten...

isn't she adorable...

The poor thing was dumped and abandoned outside a pet shop in TTDI about 2 years ago...

How anyone can do that I have no idea.. I don't understand and I don't want to...

She was just missing for two days and she had all of us worried sick..

But as I write this now, she is sleeping on a cushion next to me... without a care in the world and oblivious to the stress she caused me when I couldn't find her... and earlier, bullying Tippex and beating him up... sigh!

and this is the cat she has grown into.. full of attitude and way too opinionated for a cat!

Perth - Part 2 - Freemantle

One of my favourite places in Perth is Freemantle... a suburb by the beach where on a clear day you get a gorgeous outline of Rottnest Island.... As soon as it's a nice sunny day in Perth, you can bet that Freemantle is going to be crowded...

It's known for it's cafes, the indoor Freemantle markets and fish and chips!

I took the train down from Perth to Freemantle with some friends and just enjoyed the view along the way...

When we arrived, we headed straight for one of the most well-known fish and chips place in Freemantle, Cicerello's...

We bought a whole heap, found a place to sit and ate away without worrying about calories or fat content.

Spare me the health lecture on how bad this food really is for you... I've given it to myself already.. But I really enjoyed that meal, have no regrets and don't feel guilty!

Of course while I was there I went to the Freemantle Markets, an indoor area with lots of stalls selling all kinds of arts and crafts...

One West Australian artist who's work I love and I've been familiar with her work since the days I was studying in Perth, is Wendy Binks.

Her iconic and most well known painting or image is that of 'a stunned emu'....

I just think it's so cute and gorgeous!

She also does pottery and paints on the plates which can be used in daily life....

She also does other beautiful and such cute paintings of other Australian animals...

I would have loved to have bought one of her stunned emu paintings, but I ended up buying some magnets...

Coming soon. Perth - Part 3 - The Shopping!

Perth - Part 1 - My university

So where was I last week?

I was in one of my favourite places in the world.... Perth, Western Australia

Why is it one of my favourite places?

Because I spent almost 5 years of my life there while studying at university... I learnt so much about myself and it was during my time there that I learnt how to look after myself, be independant and make my own decisions...

The university I went to in Perth where I studied dance, acting and singing is the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (aka WAAPA), a faculty of Edith Cowan University...

So while I was there, I decided to drop by... I have such fond memories of the place....

Below is a picture of me where I spent SO MANY HOURS learning the techniques needed to perform to the best of one's abilities.. known as Dance Studio 5.... day in day out, we would have to train our bodies beyond our comfort zone....

When I saw these dance students training in dance studio 1, images of myself doing the same things a few years ago came flooding back....

One of the things I loved so much about being at this university was all of the creative energy that was and still is there... people walking around with their musical instruments, scripts, ballets shoes.... the air is a constant buzz of activity and the energy just bounces off the otherwise cold brick walls... I JUST LOVE IT!

As I was walking through the corridors, I heard the familiar sound of music students rehearsing. So I stopped to watch and listen....

As I was sitting there, I noticed this student with two toned hair.

During my time there, everyone...including myself...changed hairstyles constantly... when you're pushing yourself creatively so much, one tends to get creative with their hair as well.. I will admit to you here and now that I've had blue black hair, purple black hair, red hair (like Nicole Kidman), deep burgundy, shoulder length hair, boy short hair, blonde streaked hair... but my favourite was the electric blue hair extensions I had at one stage....

come to think of it... I'm not sure if I have pictures of me with all these hairstyles...

Just for the record, the hair colour I have now is pretty much my natural hair colour :)

While I studied there I stayed on campus and lived in this little building... the window to the room I used to stay in is behind that big tree on the end of the top floor.... a really small room...

As I was alking around, I saw one of the staff who remembered me and we started talking..

"Do you know that you are one of our most succesful graduates?" she said....

That statement question/ statement freaked me out a bit... you see Hugh Jackman (yes THE Hugh Jackman who as acted in movies such as The Prestige - one of my favourite movies - and X-Men) is also a graduate from this university... I'm serious! He graduated I think about 2-3 years before I arrived....

So.. me... successful.... as compared to him? :)

Anyway, it's believed that 'comparison only brings unhappiness' (am I right sensei?:) ) ... and I am thankful, blessed and grateful for everything so far....

However, one should not rest on past achievements, there is always more...

As I left the university to get on the bus, the same bus number I took while I was there, I couldn't help but ask myself, "If you had a chance to speak to these students, what would you tell them?"

This is what I would tell them...

On the days when you feel like you just can't do it anymore, when every muscle in your body is screaming to stop, if you can just keep going, you will find a deep set strength and discipline you may never knew you had... and even though you may ask yourself, "Why am I doing this when it's just so !@@#%#^$% hard?!)..... It will, I promise you, pay off some way, some how, some day.... it will all make sense some day...

And I still believe, my finest day, is yet to come...

Yours will too...
