keeping an eye on Vivienne Westwood

"If you want to get something from Vivienne Westwood, you have to get something a little wacky, if not, it isn't Vivienne Westwood! " are my sister's wise words.

"You got to get something cool, stylish, funky but still somehow a bit off so you can really see it's been designed by her" she continued "Like that suit Carrie Bradshaw wore!"

Vivienne Westwood is a British designer, now DAME Vivivenne Westwood who is respected as the designer who invented the punk rock look...her designs are definitely not for the faint hearted and your fashion fairy god mother better be on your side if you decide to wear a pair of her shoes, cause you just might fall like what happened to Naomi Campbell during the Vivienne Westwood fashion show years ago.

Dita von Teese wore one of her creations as her wedding dress...

I have spotted this shirt which to me fits the criteria as stated by my sister.

Eventhough it is on sale online at net-a-porter, it is still waaaaaaaay tooooooo expensive...

Again....fashion fairy godmother... can I please somehow get this shirt at.....hmmmmm... 90% discount?!!!

loving Thierry Mugler

As I was going through the clothes in the second hand shop I knew that I would find something. And find something I did. Two Thierry Mugler jackets. I think they are either late 80's or early 90's.
Mugler's biography as sourced from Wikipedia is as follows.

Mugler's early training was as a ballet dancer but he also studied design and created garments for friends at the same time. He moved to Paris in 1970 and worked as a window-dresser, designing clothing as a side job. He launched his first line Café de Paris in 1973, and founded his own label for women two years later, to be followed by designs for men in 1978.

Mugler's work over the next two decades had a style that was very much of its time: it was strong, angular, sometimes almost cruel. Shoulders were wide and padded; waists were wasp-like. Prints were banished: Mugler's clothes came in solid, dominating colours. Collars had exaggerated points, or flamelike cutouts. The insect kingdom was a constant influence, as were the ladies and gentlemen of film noir. In his most extreme runway garments, PVCwas often used, as were space and robot themes. Mugler's fashion house did not survive the 1990s, though vintage versions of his more wearable clothes are still popular on auction sites like eBay.

1997 saw the start of a lucrative partnership with the French cosmetics and skincare company Clarins the most well-known Thierry Mugler fragrances being Angel (the most popular perfume in France) and A-men fragrances. The Thierry Mugler company is now known best for its perfume division: the couture division was closed in 2003, and all Thierry Mugler ready-to-wear is now produced under licence agreements, as is a line of eyewear.

Meanwhile, Mugler turned to other artistic interests. He published two books featuring his fashion designs and photography, controversially inspired by Stalinist propaganda: Thierry Mugler (1988) and Fashion Fetish Fantasy (1998). In 1992, Mugler directed the video for George Michael's Toot Funky featuring a parade of Mugler fashions including the famous motorcycle dress.

More recently, Mugler collaborated with Cirque du Soleil on its 2003 show Zumanity at the New York New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

When I wore his jacket to the set of the tv drama, two of the other actresses kept looking at it.

"That's a really cool jacket!"

"Ya...smart gila!"

pause.... "Can I try it on please?!"

Somehow, the way it's cut, it's not just a black jacket....

So now I am on the lookout and hunt for Thierry Mugler items on ebay and other vintage websites. His designs are a little scary but his somehow if you just tone it down with simple jeans you can still wear it.

not a morning person...

It's 5am and I'm already in the office. Leaving on the very early flight. I've only had 3 hours sleep cause shooting for the tv drama finished late last night, so it's lucky we are not shooting today when we arrive. we will be just checking all the locations.

I am so not a morning person...

Hopefully I can buy some nice cheap cat collars where we're going. Tippex has lost his collar (again!) and happily walking around the neighbourhodd without one..

And I need more sunglasses too.. I can only find one pair at the moment...

how time changes things....

When I was a few months old...

When I was a few years old...

And just two days ago at a friend's wedding...

Dress is from Valentino, beaded clutch is vintage Dior and you can't see it in the picture but I wore vintage Dior earrings and a necklace I bought at Covent Garden market...

I bought this dress during the big Valentino clearance sale where everything was 50 - 90% off. I don't usually wear floral prints but I just tried it on for fun while my friend Sarah who was with me kept trying on all the white shirts she could find. She's always buying white shirts and I'm always buying black dresses. When I came out of the dressing room to show her the dress on me, she paused for a few seconds..then said.. "I like it actually! I know it's not something you would normally wear but somehow it works! Get it!"

I wasn't too sure about getting it but there was nothing else I really liked and it was very affordable since it was about 70% cheaper than the original price.

I'm glad I got it. And at the sale, I managed to convince Sarah to buy a black dress. I wonder if she has worn it yet?

Oh... and remember the black ruffled Lanvin dress I wrote about in earlier post? Well, IT IS on sale now and they still have my size available...

hmmm..... now I can seriously think about getting it.... :)

update on autographed photos..

3rd and last batch of autographed photos have been sent out. Everyone who has emailed me up until yesterday should receive one. If by the first of July you haven't received it, do let me know and I will check for you.
I have just finished designing merchandise for the TV3 documentary I'm shooting. They are in production at the moment and I have already allocated some to be given away when the show starts. Remember how I had competitions last year while 'Beauty Secrets from the East' was on air? I want to do it again this year for this show too... I will definitely keep you informed. :)
Because of the heavy rain this evening, the shooting for my tv drama had to cancelled because everything was to be shot outdoors. I feel so sorry for the production team when something like this happens because it means they have to figure out how to shoot everything again on a different day.
And tonight I have to start getting everything ready to travel next week.

Razor

I was at the launch of the new Samsonite shop in Bangsar when I heard "miaow! miaow! miaow!" From the rubbish area.....

Aiyoh.... poor thing was in amongst the rubbish....

Because I had to go back to continue shooting a few more scenes for the tv drama, I couldn't take it home, so luckily a friend of mine who was with me at the event agreed to take it home for me and to keep it til I decided what to do with it. Whether to take it home or give it to someone who could give it a good home.

Because I am shooting and travelling a lot and can't be at home much to also face the cat politics amongst Schizo, Joberg, Tippex and Lord Derbyshire that is sure to erupt because of a newcomer, I had to make the horrible decision of letting my friend Serena keep him. His name is Razor.

I really wish I could have kept him, but at least he is somewhere better than the rubbish.

And he has to get used to the neighbour's cat who is one of the biggest cats I have ever seen in my life and his name is Sultan.

Juggling production for my documentary with TV3 and shooting tv drama is unbelievably tough. When I arrive at the shoots in my office wear, I do not look like a teenager at all!!!

This is me at the shoot yesterday. Jacket is vintage Thierry Mugler worn with jeans from Target in Australia. I've ot my shooting shedule in one hand and I'm messaging various people including my producer and merchandise production contact organising things while getting hair and make up done. In the background is the real school students. Then I have to change and I still can't get used to the school shoes.

What a difference going from Dior heels (which I got on sale at 70% off - thank you fashion fairy god mother!) to school shoes that make my feet feel like boats.

And this is another one of the lead actresses in the show. Her character name is Jed and in the show, we hate each other too. In the show only.... :)

life is good....

When I went to sleep last night, I was so exhausted, grumpy and stressed...

My shooting shedules keep slipping and sliding all over the place cause of situations out of my control and I have to accomodate everything and do my best for each and everyone.

When I woke up this morning, I realised that all of my stress is actually caused by good and positive things. All of them are projects I want to do. So now, though I am still stressed, it's stress that I am happy about. It's wonderful how just a good night's sleep can help change a perception on things.

I almost ended up with fifth cat. But I had to give him away. But he is in a very safe place and I can visit him anytime. I will share with you a picture of him soon and how I found him.

Now I got more emails and proposals to write and I have 4 scenes to shoot today for the drama.

life is good..

more shooting...

Back in town. Was in Kelantan for the TV3 anniversary road tour. Had my one of my favourites things while I was there. Ayam percik with nasi kerabu!!! Yum, Yum!!!!

Tomorrow (Sunday) is a full day shooting the tv drama. And every scene being shot is one with me in it. 7.30 am call time and I will be lucky if we finish before midnight. But I have organised the present for my dad for father's day.

Have to finish reading all of my scripts for every episode so I know exactly what's going on. Scenes are not shot in sequence so as an actor you have to know the whole story, from beginning to end so you can understand the significance of each and every scene so as not to get confused while it's being shot.

I am soooooo sleepy....better get some sleep if not no way I can think on the spot while I'm shooting tomorrow. ...

Oh yeah...and the make up artists think I look like a barbie doll... schoolgirl barbie! I really have lost track now of how many people have said I look like a barbie doll..

Fashion wish list

three things currently topping my fashion wish list. Hoping and asking my fashion fairy godmother to help me get these items on discount somewhere somehow. And still have to do some overtime work to pay for it all...

1 - Lanvin dress

I loved the Spring Summer Lanvin collection. So feminine and I love the use of ruffles. I have spotted this black lanvin t-shirt dress at an online designer store and I am just waiting and hoping that they still have my size when they go on sale. of course when i emailed them asking them when is their next sale, they said they only have very few pieces and basically hinted I should buy it now at full price. hellllloooooooo!!! I don't find money in my rubbish! I work long hours for it. and I have heard the whole, 'we've got very limited pieces, you should just get it now' sales pitch so many times only to find out that they do have more. while it is still expensive, it is much cheaper than the runway pieces, captures the enssence of the collection and is a timeless design, and on sale, i just might be able to afford it.

Recently at a private event, I saw a lady wearing this white ruffled lanvin top from the same collection. She wore it with grey jeans, silver sequinned Christian Louboutin shoes and with a matt silver chanel clutch with the iconic chanel camelia flower on it. Simply stunning....

I have heard from a friend that the Lanvin shop in Singapore is pretty good with a good selection of stuff. And while I was there recently I didn't go... aiyoh.... the Lanvin shop at Starhill in KL is boring.

2 - Fendi B watch

I went to Fendi to pick up my dark grey fendi B Belt which I did get on sale (yay!) - which I think would look great worn with the lanvin dress above - and saw a silver version of this watch.

When I tried it on, it looks, cool, rugged, elegant and chic all at the same time. The diamonds in it are very appealing too. If I get it..... ok, ok... WHEN I get it (power of positive thinking here) it will be one of the few things I own with real diamonds.

3 - Classic Chanel ballet flats

Easy, comfortable and great for those days where my feet and back just can't handle me wearing high heels anymore.

Now, I better get some work done.... :)

And in regards to the autographed photo, 3rd batch will be sent out this week. My apologies for the delay. My shooting shedule has made it difficult to get organised. I am so glad to receive emails from many of you saying you have already received it, but 3 autographed photos were sent back to me. I don't know if it's because it was sent to a wrong address. Nik Nur Adlin in Kelantan, please email sasha_a_b@yahoo.com with a valid postal address so you can receive it.

Being a school girl

we hate each other. i make her life difficult and miserable. she tries to out do me, but hey, i'm just smarter. (this scenario is only real in the tv drama we're acting in together, not in real life!)

shooting this tv drama takes long hours which makes me thankful that the 'costume' i have to wear most of the time is comfortable. and my hair doesn't have to be perfect. i definitely didn't go to school with perfect hair! i'm sure I was quite selekeh in school! It is weird wearing a school uniform again though! The sneakers are comfortable but I feel so sloppy in them. I still prefer heels.

Elaine Daly appears in this show too. She's not a school girl though. She is a cikgu!

Here are some behind the scenes pics on the set. The woman with the headset on is one of the directors.

lots ahead...

my timetable for the next two months is pretty much full. I will be working everyday, whether it's shooting, writing scripts, reading scripts, writing articles, proofing photos, making arrangements... no weekends for me!

and then there is the concern of the sudden increase of petrol prices. I wish we had better side walks. cause then I could use my car a lot less and just ride a bicycle. would be better for the environment too. and I would become really fit too. :)

It's not just the petrol prices, but it means that everything is now going to go up in price. I don't mind so much the cost of things like clothes going up in price. It's the cost of food that worries me.

I suppose we all just have to take one day at a time. ..

another question...

Hi Sasha,

I have a ball to attend to in June and believe it or not, I have not even decided on what to wear! I am small in size (1.55m), 21 years old and most importantly, I badly want to hide some bulges, thus each time I try on a dress in those-only-for-the-tall and lean-ladies boutiques, I feel my self-esteem drop a notch as they just hug at the wrong places and show off those buldges that I desperately want to hide. I am at a loss on what I could possibly wear which is not only comfortable but will show off my outgoing personality. =B

I was wondering if you could offer some advices on how to find suitable dresses for ladies out there who have different body shapes and sizes.

It would really help and I personally would really really appreciate it!

Answer
I totally understand the feeling! I have tried on many pieces of clothing that 'hug' or 'grab' me in all the wrong places. This is why I love flowing dresses so much. They hide everything! Here is what you could try to look and more importantly feel fantastic when you go for your ball.

1 - get good underwear
Those body suit things that act as a second skin is fantastic for just smoothing over the body. Wearing underwear that is too tight only high lights bulges.

2 - High heels
High heels are one of the greatest inventions ever! And with the current fashion of having the platforms in the front only makes it easier to add at least 3 inches to your height immediately. Invest in a good pair of heels.

3 - Alteration
No big deal if the dress is too long. Get it shortened at a tailor. Why stress yourself trying to fit into clothes that only make you feel bad about yourself. Life is too short. So many clothes out there. Make the clothes fit you. For example, a particular dress would look great on you if only it were a bit shorter and the top part is a bit loose. Don't worry, get it all altered. I cannot even begin to tell you how many of my clothes have been altered to fit me. I have sent up to 3 paper bags full of clothes to be altered at the tailor at a time.

4 - Try Zara
I notice Zara has a lot of nice printed flowing dresses at the moment. And yes, they are very long, even for me. Try some of those cause the loose flow of movement will hide anything you want to hide. Most of them have spaghetti straps which means your arms will be showing. If you don't want to show your arms cause you are self concious for whatever reason, not to worry. They would look great with a little cropped jacket in a colour matching the dress. Add a brooch to the jacket, wear your really high heels, nice clutch and you will be ready to go!

Fashion does not have to be difficult. Make it work for you!

Answering a few fashion questions...

Question
sasha, youre a model, you're a star, who would you say you're inspiration? especially in fashion.

would it be Kate Moss? Victoria Beckham? Angelina Jolie? Sienna Miller? etc.

p/s : i love Kate moss collection too!but sometimes, it doesnt look so good, but youre paying it for the name.her winter collection was better than summer collection, i guess.

Answer
Hmmmmm...... The names that first come to my mind for fashion inspiration are
- Dita von Teese for doing Hollywood pin up glamour so so well,
-Gwen Stefani for somehow making the Marilyn Monroe look totally her own,
-Sarah Jessica Parkr for having the guts to wear some of the most ridiculous combination of clothes I have ever seen but somehow managing to pull it off in a way no one else can,
-Victoria Beckham cause though I sometimes cringe at the things she wear, there is something I love about her,
- Audrey Hepburn for proving that simplicity always wins,
- Patricia Fields, the stylist for Sex and the City for inspiring me to never underestimate the possibilities of styling. She can make the ugliest thing look chic just by combining it well with something unexpected.

I admire Angelina Jolie, Madonna and Audrey Hepburn for their dedication to humanitarian causes. I also admire rescue workers and people in high risk jobs such as firemen and those people who do things like diffuse live bombs for risking their own lives for the sake of others.

I admire working mothers who manage a job and raising children all at the same time. I have 4 cats and I feel like I can barely cope sometimes!!!

Before the Kate Moss for Topshop collection came out, I was very sceptical if it would be any good and if I would like it. After seeing a few collections now, I actually hope it goes on for a while. I like the dresses, jackets and evening tops. The singlet tops are so thin and feel cheap to me and there is no way those skinny jeans and shorts will look good on me! Yes, I feel it is a little over priced too. This is where I pray to my fashion fairy godmother to keep my size available for me to buy during the sale.

Question
Can you suggest ways to wear bejewelled flat sandals.

I suggest to wear them with anything cropped or short. Example cropped pants to below the knee, or shorts, or a skirt. Reason is cause what's the point of wearing jewelled sandals if they are going to be covered by long pants, jeans or skirts? You want people to see them. Also, the jewels will probably catch on your long pants and rip the hemline on the pants. Something like this has happened to me before. I wore jewelled heels with a long dress. By the end of the night, the whole front area of the hemline was completely ripped cause the jewels of the shoes caught on the fabric with every step I made!

Question
Which Topshop has the patches dress you mentioned? I went to Sunway Pyramid and they don't have it there.

I saw and tried on that dress at the Pavillion in Kuala Lumpur

Question
Any idea when Topshop have their end of season sale in Malaysia? I love that Topshop dress. How much was it?

Answer
I'm not sure when the big sale is, but they do have a few racks at the moment of discounted items. I think the dress was almost RM500.
